Charles W. Cox – we’re looking for a picture.

Charles was born in 1924 in New Jersey and lived in East Orange, Essex County.

Being single, he enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on August 5th, 1943. He then went to Fort Dix in September 1943. From here he was transferred to Fort Benning in Georgia where he trained from September 1943 until April 1944. He then took training at Fort Meade, Maryland from April 1944 until June 1944.

After training he went overseas and came ashore in Normandy, where on the 31st of July, he was assigned to Company C, 60th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division. Because of his late assignment to his Company, none of the other men really knew Charles, as they only had been with him for 3 short days before he got wounded and went missing.

It was reported that on August 3rd 1944, C Company about half a mile west of Les Badonnieres, a town located about 11 miles west of Vire, when Private Cox was wounded, but failed to return to his unit. Unfortunately, no one had any knowledge of his whereabouts. He might have rested at a spot where he thought he was safe after getting wounded, without his fellow Company knowing about it. During morning roll call the next day, Charles was not present. There is a possibility that Charles was captured and moved to another location where he might have died. There is no other information available about Charles.
